PCM Storage Tank Transported to Kizildere 2, Turkey

Wed, 22 May, 2024

A phase change material (PCM) storage tank has been transported to the Kilzidere 2 geothermal power plant in Turkey.

This was made possible by through the collaborative efforts and cooperation of TWI Ltd, CEA, Naldeo, Zolru Enerji and SEGU.

This latest action continues GeoSmart’s work to improve the performance of geothermal energy technologies, where PCMs are seen as a potential solution to guarantee the normal functionality of geothermal power generation systems.

Finding a stable heat storage medium with excellent heat transfer properties at high temperatures has been a challenge due to the corrosion behaviour of potential metal/metal-alloy materials at high operating temperatures.

The GeoSmart team have assessed the corrosion behaviour of potential metal/metal-alloy materials by exposure to nitrate-nitrite PCMs at elevated temperatures, providing a detailed understanding on the corrosivity of the PCMs and the corrosion resistance of the metal/metal-alloy materials.

With the storage tank now delivered to the Kilzidere 2 site, the project team will be able to assess its performance in a real-world setting.

The GeoSmart project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 818576.
